Galway and the "Inbetweens"

The best part of a road trip is getting to see the inbetweens.  So often when we travel, we plane hop from place to place missing so much of the beauty that lies between the major tourist attractions.  Our road trip through Ireland was one for the books when it comes to the inbetweens.  Every twist of the road revealed a new landscape appearing to have been photo-shopped, every turn of the car a vantage point more stunning. The best part about traveling by car is the ability to stop at a moment's notice to snap a picture, or just stretch your legs on an abandoned road with a back drop that isn't a traditional rest stop.  Our drive from Sligo to Galway City was full of gorgeous inbetweens and round robin limerick games in the car. "There was a man from County Mayo..."

While we drove, we admittedly had no idea what we planned to do between our destinations.  We picked up a couple of free tourist books for the different areas of Ireland to get some ideas.  We discovered that the Kylemore Abbey was just off the road, so we were able to see this gem and its grounds.  We opted not to pay the rather absurd entry fee and instead just looked from afar.

We spent the evening in Galway, "City of Tribes", where we had our first real Irish lamb stew and a few more pints of the black stuff.  The Latin Quarter was buzzing with the after-work crowd getting an early start to the weekend's St Patrick's Day festivities.  We watched some kayakers do their best to navigate the river through the city as it rushed into calmer waters, and watched many other do their best to navigate the streets to find their way home after one too many.
